Yo! You’re specially invited to a vibey lil studio gathering…

An evening of music, games, and having a go at voice acting for some bitesize animations I'm making, representing real people and characters from London culture.

Sunday, September 20th | 5-9pm | Qube Studios in Canary Wharf

(9 Park Dr, Canary Wharf Estate, London E14 9GG, nearest station Canary Wharf / Heron Quays)

“What’s this about then?”

In the A.I. era I really want to make the case for real people and real collaboration in the artform of animation, so I thought it’d be sick to bring some people together that’ve never had the opportunity to play characters or do voice acting, but have always wanted to. This’ll be an opportunity to shapeshift and explore different sides of yourself.

I'm hosting a bunch of these free sessions, as I’m looking to do a series of short animated depictions of some of the coolest, boldest, and funniest characters I've met. This’ll be representing the faces, styles and personalities of London culture, mainly from Black and mixed backgrounds. I'm also working on an own animation show about the Black British experience, but this particular series is a separate thing — smaller, looser, just me getting to collaborate with enthusiasts using the craft of animation.

You’ll get to decide if you want an animation of yourself, or if you’d wanna be or act as a completely original London character you make up on the night.

No experience needed, nothing to prepare, and nobody's auditioning - just an evening to experiment, let loose and get playful.

“Calm so, how’s the night gonna go?”

Food and drinks will be provided likely to be from 5, out in the lounge. We're in the studio from 6 and food isn't allowed in there, so defo come through early if you’d like some. Will be confirming what food soon!

Then we get into it. Card games with prompts that get conversations going, debates, improv, pairing up — recording along the way with room to mess about and so on.

We’re expecting just a group of 8-10 people, and mainly friends of friends. People are welcome to leave at any time or just chill and vibe, it’s a cool spot.

RSVP If you’re coming through!

Disclosure/Post-session plans

I’ll be looking to capture some photos and clips of the session, and I’m also planning to post what I animate alongside clips of each person recording their bits (as like a BTS split screen kinda thing). These would be probably be on Insta and TikTok, so let me know if you’re cool with being filmed or would rather opt out and stick to just audio - no probs either way!

For those who are cool with it, naturally I’d send the clip and animation to you to check it out before anything goes.

In terms of the content, animation takes a bit of time, so expect the clips of each person to trickle out every couple of weeks or so.

Side note: you won’t be put in any official broadcasted series, show or anything like that without your explicit permission and a proper process behind it. Currently this is just a casual thing.

Feedback is welcome!

“Sounds fun! Who’s organising this though? What’s House of Mazza?”

I'm Ali — visual artist, animator and music lover. I'm putting on House of Mazza, a series of grassroot events built around music, games, visual art and food, for people into fandom (think gaming, Marvel, anime etc), immersive experiences and experimental activities. The concept and its ethos, "play harder", come out of my years living in a West London house full of DJs and designers, where we threw parties and gatherings out of our own front door, with everyone contributing to the vibe and the food.

As a big thank you, I’ll be bringing some cool things I’m working on like T-shirts, stickers, etc.

Thanks and see you there!
